Abstract: A series of tests on impacting penetration into frozen soil were conducted in laboratory and in situ with an automatic impacting penetrator. The mechanism of impacting penetration into frozen soil was investigated based on the test results. And then a theory on the penetrating depth, the number of impact and the relation between penetrating resistance and depth was obtained by means of dynamic spherical cavity expansion.
