Abstract:
Rapeseed oil is a promising feedstock for producing biodiesel, and its advantage as a raw material to produce biodiesel (fatty acid methyl esters) and its profitable environmental effects were reviewed in this paper. In addition, the production processes for biodiesel production from rapeseed oil using chemical, lipase catalysis and supercritical fluid methods were estimated. Chemical method was a matured industrial way with fast reaction and low cost, however, it caused a heavy environmental pollution. Enzymatic method was characterized with mild reacting conditions, while its cost was higher, and reaction speed was slower. Catalyzer was not needed in supercritical fluid method, but higher temperature and pressure were required. Finally, the limiting factors and advices on biodiesel industry were pointed out.
