Sediment budget for Liuhe River drainage basin

    • Liuhe River has the most sediment concentration in the Northeast of China, while sedimentation is the most serious problem in the river. The water and sediment characteristics of Liuhe River and a mass budget for the suspended sediment for this river were established in a period of 16 years. The approach consisted of analyzing the amount of sediment contributed by the different tributaries and the sediment storage in different reaches, through the data observed by 6 hydrometric stations of Liuhe River. The findings indicate that nearly 53.5% of the suspended sediment coming from upstream was stored in the riverway, and 87.9% of the deposited sediment stored in the sector stretching from Naodehai to Zhangwu. Further study on the coupling relationship between the runoff, soil erosion upland, the sediment yield from the outlet and the sediment storage in channel was conducted, which can be used to estimate the tendency of variation in the sedimentation of the lower Liuhe River and sediment yield from this basin.
