Experimental study on Spartina alterniflora and dam engineering for promoting deposition on Tidal-flat in Jiangsu Province of China

Abstract
There is abundance of beach land resource in Jiangsu Province, especially the radial tidal sands near seashore areas which has wide foreground for reclamation in the near future. The authors designed two experiment patterns for promoting deposition with Spartina alterniflora engineering and dam engineering method. By observing, surveying and calculating several times, the tests show that the silting rate is slow but duration is long in experiment area Ⅰ which is made up of only Spartina alterniflora, and the silting rate is fast but duration is short in experiment area Ⅱ which is made up of the net-shaped dams and Spartina alterniflora. The results also indicate that Spartina alterniflora has little use in experiment area Ⅱ, and the big net-shaped dams and open-mouth net-shaped dams are effective for promoting deposition, and all the deposition shape taken in triangle in any net-shaped dams. The effect of engineering on the neighboring circumference was also discussed. It shows that the study is very important for enclosing and exploitation the radial tidal sands.
