Effects of supplementary lighting source on the development of Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi

    • Under greenhouse conditions, the influences of three different lamps (metal halide lamp, fluorescent lamp and sodium lamp) on the growth of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus Glomus mosseae were studied. The results showed that different supplementary lighting source with different spectrum influence the development of host plant-fungal isolate combinations differently. The level of photosynthesis of host plants and the concentration of soluble sugar in host plants under the sodium lamp treatment were higher than those under other tow treatments. By comparison of total length of external hyphae, colonized root length and spore numbers, the sodium lamp was found to be the best supplementary lamp for mycorrhizal development among the three supplementary lamps. The concentrations of N and P in host plants under metal halide lamp and fluorescent lamp treatments were higher than that under the sodium lamp treatment. It might influence the development of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi adversely. So, when AM fungal inoculum is produced on a factory scale, if supplementary lighting source is needed, the sodium lamp is the best choice.
