Experimental study on the bending mechanical properties of wheatstalk

    • Wheat stalks are taken as research objects forbuilding finite-element models. In thecalculations of non-linear buckling analysis based on these models, different geometry and material parameters areused to simulate corresponding buckling statuses. Results show that, if keepingotherparameters unchanged, wall thickness has the most significant influence, followed by the ratios of the Young's modulus intangential and longitudinal directions. As a result of the calculations, a four-point experiment was carried out, onwheat stalks which were in two growth periods, to research the relationship between curvature and bending moment, axial second moment, and failure modes of wheat stalks. Results of the experiments show that Brazier buckling is themain failure mode of wheat stalks under bending load, from anthesis to mature period, the flexural rigidity of stalks decreases, and the probability of Brazierbuckling increases.
